Homeownership Means I’m Paying Myself

By OHFA Communications

As a Finance major, Sam admits she enjoys crunching numbers.

Sam and her husband Blake recently purchased their first home in Tulsa with the help of OHFA Homebuyer Down Payment Assistance. Rather than paying rent to a landlord, Sam says the couple views the purchase as making an investment in themselves.

“Every month when we pay our mortgage, I love knowing that we are paying ourselves,” she said. “I think about the equity we’re building every time I pay the bill.”

Utilizing OHFA Homebuyer Down Payment Assistance meant Sam and Blake could purchase the house they wanted and pay closing costs without breaking the bank.

With 30-foot crape myrtle trees lining the lot and a long extended driveway, Sam and Blake were first attracted to the curb appeal of the house. They knew they needed to put in an offer on the house quickly. Getting pre-qualified by Waterstone Mortgage, an OHFA Approved Lender, helped Sam and Blake make an offer within 12 hours of the house being listed. Down payment assistance made their home loan more affordable.

Sam, Blake, and their chocolate lab, Ranger, have settled into their new home. They enjoy the large yard and the unique features of their home’s interior. Best of all, they like the fact it belongs to them.
